Our vision

To make Windeyer diverse, sustainable, and ensure this little brand is welcoming to all. As a company, we should be representative of Toronto’s population, and be a driver of positive social change.

Goals & Action Items

1. Representation: We will make every effort to ensure that going forward, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour) will be represented on our site, in our social media and marketing, and at our events. If we have the opportunity to grow our team, future hiring will prioritize BIPOC candidates.

  • We are establishing a permanent 25%-off discount for all workshops hosted in our studio for those self-identifying as Black or Indigenous.

  • We commit to hiring majority BIPOC models.

2. Collaboration: Going forward, we will prioritize partnering with BIPOC suppliers/vendors/freelancers when we have the option to do so. Everyone we collaborate with should demonstrate a commitment to anti-racism.

3. Acknowledgment: The contemporary practice of ‘natural dyeing’ does not spring from thin air, but rather builds on the traditional knowledge and practices of Indigenous Peoples from around the globe. It behooves us to recognize these traditional knowledge keepers, and better understand the history of the craft we so enjoy.

  • We are excited to do more research on traditional dyeing techniques, and to share our learning with our community. We will do our best to foreground the knowledge and expertise of Indigenous Peoples and traditional knowledge keepers in our workshops and on our blog.

  • When possible, we will opt to continue our learning directly from traditional knowledge holders, and we will promote their workshops on our website & social media.

  • Our website now features a repository of our research on the history of natural dyeing. It includes a recommended reading/resource list for those interested in pursuing their own study of natural dye.

4. Personal development: Beyond Windeyer and what we can achieve as a small brand, we, Isabel and Joanna, commit to dismantling racist systems. We commit to educating ourselves, listening to and amplifying BIPOC voices, supporting BLM, and empowering Indigenous Peoples.

5. Putting our money where our mouth is: We are proud to commit to donating 10% of Windeyer profits to social justice causes. We prioritize those that fight racism, serve vulnerable women, and empower BIPOC people. Here are some of the causes we’ve supported to date: Native Women’s Association of Canada, Women’s Health in Women’s Hands, Butterfly: Asian and migrant sex workers network, Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan, UNHCR Canada Ukraine Emergency Fund, and the Women’s Committee of Iran NCRI.
